The Company
Now there’s a better way to stay comfortably cool. The PolarPillow is an innovation in sleep technology, because it's half pillow, half endothermic gel. The gel stays cool via a reaction between it and the ambient air temperature – no refrigeration necessary! While the pillow itself is much heavier than a regular pillow, you don't need to turn it to the "cool side" (you can rest on the comfortable gel, which stays cool for several hours at a time), so the weight is a non-issue.

Nick Segal, Duke University graduate and PolarPillow inventor, says that after a lifetime of pillow-flipping, he decided to engineer his own solution with help from his entrepreneurial partner and designer, Molly Lehnhardt. Made in Tennessee, these therapeutic pillows are sure to be a summer comfort for everyone, but they're particularly soothing for neck pain and migraine sufferers, athletes, pregnant women, and menopausal women (it won't cure hot flashes, but it'll make them easier to bear).

The Review
How PolarPillow Works:

• PolarPillow's endothermic gel technology uses the coolness of ambient room temperature to dissipate your body's heat.
  
• PolarPillow feels cool within 10 seconds of contact.
  
• PolarPillow stays cool for approximately two hours of contact (just enough time to fall asleep), but it gradually warms over the course of a night's use as it takes on your body's temperature.
  
• When not in use, PolarPillow's coolness will re-energize within 20 minutes of exposure to an air-conditioned room (about 75 degrees).
  
• PolarPillow contains more than 200 ounces of cooling gel (about 12 lbs). The liquid gel is heavy and PolarPillow weighs much more than a regular pillow.
  
• PolarPillow requires no set up, maintenance, electricity, refrigeration or water.
  
• PolarPillow fits in a standard pillowcase.
  

PolarPillow’s endothermic gel technology uses the coolness of ambient room temperature to dissipate body heat. PolarPillow requires no set-up, maintenance, electricity, batteries, refrigeration, chemicals or water. You’ll notice that the PolarPillow is heavier than a normal pillow due to the weight of the liquid gel that keeps it cool. In order to maintain maximum coolness we added the most gel possible, which allows the PolarPillow to stand out from the competition. The weight is secondary to the pillow’s purpose and luckily you will never have to move or flip the pillow to find a cool spot anyway! The current iteration of PolarPillow is a mode ideally suited for side sleepers (we are now working on a prototype customized for back sleepers)



PolarPillow Simple Instructions:

• Place the PolarPillow in a standard pillowcase just like a regular pillow.
  
• Make sure the blue/cool side faces up and the white side faces down.
  
• Lay your head on the PolarPillow and you will start to feel coolness in 10 seconds!
  
• When not in use, avoid placing other pillows on top of the PolarPillow to allow for maximum air exposure so the pillow can re-energize itself.
  

The concept of this pillow is great - it does cool your head and face within seconds allowing you to fall asleep faster but it is too thin for me. I like my pillow to be nice and fluffy so I tried using the PolarPillow on top of another pillow but it kept sliding off. If they come with a nice fluffy pillow, they can count me in. This pillow is recommended for side sleepers and they are currently working on a prototype customized for back sleepers.

Since I can’t use the pillow for sleeping I found an alternative use - with MS my ankles hurt when they become overheated so I have started using this pillow under my ankles while sitting on the couch and I was so excited when it cooled my ankles down and helped relieve the pain. 19. I found this interesting: If you wake up in the middle of the night after being on the side of the pillow for more than 2 hours, the endothermic reaction will have finished it's cycle and the pillow may feel room temperature.

39. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine reported that a primary cause of insomnia is hyperactivity in the brain's frontal lobes at night. This activity increases the brain's temperature making it difficult to fall asleep. Cooling your head at night can help slow down this activity and allow your brain to rest.
